Rare Blue Diamonds
Natural blue diamonds are extremely rare and are much more expensive than white diamonds, like many other color Diamonds; but Blue diamonds are among the rarest of all coloured diamonds. They were originally mined in India’s famous Golconda mine, today blue diamonds are mined in Australia and South Africa, they can cost as much as $100,000 to $250,000 USD per carat, depending on color, clarity and carat weight.
So what makes diamond blue? The blue color in natural diamonds is caused by boron, this element boron only exists in .001% of the earth’s crust, it is a naturally occurring mineral. The concentration of boron in the area where diamonds are mined will contribute to the intensity of the color in a blue diamond, increasing its market price accordingly.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades natural blue diamonds on the following scale from lightest to most intense: faint blue, very light blue, fancy light blue, fancy blue and fancy dark blue. The Hope Diamond is considered a fancy dark blue diamond.
Lab Grown Blue Diamonds
A lab-created blue diamond starts out the way natural blue diamonds are made. Scientists can control quality factors of lab-grown blue diamonds easier within the chamber. They are created the same way as mined diamonds. Instead of hoping the boron will come into contact with the diamond, scientists manually introduce it to the crystal.
Lab-Created Blue Diamonds as all diamonds follow the 4Cs of diamond quality put forth by the Gemological Institute of America: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat.
And come with certification.
